Classic Opel Spares

I have a nice hoard of dashboard instruments salvaged from various Opel Manta A series, the majority are from the base model deLuxe "S" specification Opel Manta A series with the large clock and not the tachometer or rev counter fitted to the higher specification SR and Berlinetta models.

Needless to say they all have different odometer readings, for the one shown below I constructed a nifty winder mechanism to spin the odometer back round to zero. If you have a broken speedometer and want to match a specific mileage, do let me know and I'll find the closest match.

It is ridiculous keeping so many in stock when they could still be useful to others for stripping down for parts. As they are all salvaged, I can't guarantee that they will be complete or working, but if you have any gripes, I will send a replacement. As far as I'm aware exactly the same cluster was used in the Opel Ascona A series too.

As can be seen in the images it is not perfect with some scratches present on the black sections. I suppose these could be touched in with a little paint or a marker pen and a very steady hand.

The rear view shows that this particular design of rev counter has three terminals for; the live power feed, a neutral feed and the signal from the distributor.

Here you can see the same rev counter when mounted in an instrument cluster, the odometer on the speedometer reads 42000 miles.

31/03/16 - Last rev counter sold

When I bought my first Opel Manta A series in 1987 it had exactly the same design of gauge pod installed above the transmission tunnel. At first I thought it was something that some "Kev the rev" enthusiast had installed over a weekend; later I discovered that they were only fitted to all the "sporty" models in the range branded as Rallye or SR models. Even the top of the range Berlinetta model didn't get these gauges.
Furthermore, in the UK, this particular style of pod was only installed in the early models and is  identified by the white lettering on the instruments; later cars received red paint and had a more angled pod which admittedly was much easier to read from the driving seat.

This particular pod is not in the best of condition, close inspection of the mounting points will reveal that it has a section missing, I don't know whether this is repairable.

The ammeter and oil pressure gauges are present, I wasn't able to test the oil pressure gauge, but I tested the ammeter and it works OK. There was no clock present with this set of gauges, but I can supply a very nice Kienzle brand clock from the same era and it will probably be far more reliable than the original electro-mechanical one which were never up to much.

Here are a couple of Opel Manta A series headlamp surrounds that a lot of people have been making enquiries about. The first of these is still in fair condition, the plastic body is free from cracks or other damage, it was quite dirty but responded well to gentle cleaning. It would seem that there are some areas of paint over-spray, nothing that an hour or so with T-Cut or similar abrasive polish wouldn't sort out though.

The brightwork looks fine at a distance, but close up inspection reveals some surface scratching; it looks like someone did some D.I.Y. bodywork on the adjacent front wing and inadvertently sanded over the bright-work with a low grade of paper.
Unfortunately I don't think that you can polish out the scratches with this style of brightwork, but please feel free to correct me if you know better.

Either way this headlamp surround would still make an excellent replacement part for an everyday classic or track day car. Plus there is also the option of repainting the trim in silk black, just like the Manta A GT/e, or alternatively in body colour for a custom finish.

The second of these Manta A headlamp surrounds is also in fair condition and the plastic body is free from cracks or other damage, a little more elbow grease with T-Cut or similar abrasive polish would no doubt yield a high gloss finish.

This is the last one of a pair of repair panels hand made in Germany to replace a chassis rail on the Opel Manta A series.

The U section was formed from two right angle pieces mig welded together along the full length. For a hand made panel there is plenty of detailing; with nicely formed drip holes and curved sections to follow the floor pan.

Finished in grey primer paint, it is in excellent condition having been dry stored for 20 years. This could be a useful part for restoring an everyday vehicle and would save you a lot of fabricating time for very little outlay.

On offer are interior rear panels for the Opel Manta A series, these are for the black vinyl interior as used on the SR, Rallye and most of the Deluxe (base level) models.

The driver side panel is in fair condition, but the chrome bright work strip has peeled and gone dark in places. The hardboard backing looks to have suffered from damp, which is most noticeable in the lower left hand corner.

Either of these would be a great item for a daily driver, or alternatively as the basis for re-upholstery back to show standard. On offer are two driver's side interior door panels, these are for the black vinyl interior as used on the SR, Rallye and most of the Deluxe (base level) models.

Door panel #1 is a little wrinkled around the window winder aperture, although the picture makes it look a bit worse than it appears to the eye (click on the picture for the full resolution version) and there is also a bit of vinyl missing to the top right of the hole.
There is a nick on the top left edge where the door has rubbed against the A post trim and someone has popped a self-tapping screw through the bottom left corner. The bright work has become milky in patches.

Door panel #2 is a bit less wrinkled, but it does have three small puncture marks close to the lower edge where something has been mounted by drilling into the door frame through the panel.
There is a nick in the top right edge and the majority of the bright work strip is milky and peeling.

Following in the wake of the recent sale of radiator shrouds for the Opel Manta B GT/e, here is another item for this particular vehicle. It is the centre console, complete with 4 C-Box cassette storage holders for that truly classic vibe. If cassettes aren't your thing, they can be easily removed to reveal a generous storage cubby hole.

I don't keep much in the way of Opel Manta B series parts in stock, so I was surprised to see that someone needed just what I have available. I spotted on the Opel Manta Owners Club forum that Paul, an old acquaintance, was looking for the plastic shroud to fit on the radiator of his Opel Manta B series GT/e, I knew I had not one but two of these items sitting in a dusty recess of my loft. They responded very well to a quick bath and looked to be very presentable by the time I had finished.

A deal was quickly struck for both and they are now en route to sunny Cornwall. This made me think about putting some effort in to listing all the remaining Opel Manta B series parts I have; starting with the radiator for this model.

Here's a mystery part that has sat on the same shelf for a couple of decades waiting to be identified. It is a new old stock Bosch distributor cap for a 6 cylinder engine GM/Opel/Vauxhall engine. The Opel catalogue number is 1212138 and the part number is 2894694. The number 1235522060 is embossed on the distributor cap itself in raised lettering.

My guess is that it is a late Opel Commodore, Opel Monza or Vauxhall Royale item, but the chances are that if you have got this far you will know more about this Vauxhall or Opel distributor cap than I.

I have been lucky to have only experienced a cracked distributor cap once in my driving career and it killed the car instantly. So it is always good to keep a spare cap handy in case of failure or to restore your vehicle to the way it was when it was new. It's unusual for me to have non-GM items in my collection, especially anything as weird as these early 70s Mini Clubman wing trim panels that I came across whilst clearing out my loft.

To the best of my knowledge they were for the rare early 70s Mini Clubman "woody" estate model.
There was a metal section with the Fablon style faux wood finish, it had sun fading and flaking of the finish on the outer side and some light rust visible on the inner side. There were also two brightwork trim pieces which were in quite good condition, all bright and shiny with no dents, etc.

Given the scarcity of such parts, I wanted these items to go to an enthusiast, rather than the scrap bin. I posted on a few Mini enthusiasts' FaceBook groups and found a buyer in under a week. This has proved to be a much easier process than finding new homes for classic Opel spares, hmm, I'm in the wrong business.

On offer is a set of new old stock rear brake shoes, they are manufactured by CBS auto parts and marked up as Box 108. They are listed as suitable for; the Opel Manta A, Opel Ascona A, Opel Kadett B, Opel Rekord C, Opel Commodore A and even the Opel Olympia. Although not listed, I can see no reason why the Opel GT isn't included, as it used the same rear axle as the other cars shown above.

It is important to note that these parts have a folded section to mate with the handbrake cable and not the hook used on many of the later models. Do make sure that your vehicle has the correct hand brake cable to match, which I believe has ball ends.

Unlike the modern equivalents these vintage items normally have a softer compound, which provides great stopping power and doesn't wear your brake drums out so rapidly. Avoid costly MOT failures and restore your vehicle to the way it was when it was new. These are now hard to find items, with just a handful of sets left in stock and I will not be replacing them, so don't hang about if this is what you need for your project.
